Episode 11. The young neuroscientist helping to replace teen doom-scrolling with positive, fulfilling habits

TJ Power is an author, professional speaker and neuroscientist. He’s dedicating his life to answering our modern world’s mental health challenges, one of which will resonate with just about every parent on the planet. TJ has developed an extraordinarily clever model to help people – particularly teenagers – to replace social media “doom-scrolling” and other addictive behaviours with healthier habits which will positively impact their mental health. If you’re a parent, this will be 53 minutes very well spent.

If you’re a parent of teenage kids, or younger, and you’ve been thinking about the wellbeing of the young people in your life, I’m fairly sure that the introductory clip you just heard will have caught your attention.

That was the voice of TJ Power. TJ is an author, a professional speaker and a neuroscientist. As he puts it, he’s dedicating his life to answering our modern world’s mental health challenges. He has already worked with tens of thousands of school children, as well as with many well known organisations like Salesforce, CocaCola, Accenture, the NHS and the University of Oxford. And with impressive, demonstrable results.

In my view, TJ is extraordinary. He’s a great communicator. He’s practical. He’s focussed on a problem which is causing issues around the world. And he’s determined to fix that problem. He has developed a clear and clever model to help people – something which teenagers will pick up and run with. I think his ideas and his communication style will carry him a long way.

And as he’s just explained, at age 27, he sits midway between teenagers and parents, and so he finds himself in the perfect space and time to tackle these challenges head on.

I spent some time with TJ in June this year at his home in Surrey, England, and I started by asking him what’s motivated him to zero in on these really important issues.
