Digging into the DNA of risk culture

This week, yBC announces the launch of a new podcast – produced in collaboration with seasoned risk expert Richard Anderson in London.

Risk shapes everything. Markets shift. Governments change course (sometimes dramatically, in a short space of time). Technology disrupts. And in a world where uncertainty is the only constant, leaders must learn not just to manage risk—but to master it.

Welcome to The Risk Appetite Podcast, where we explore how decision-makers across business, politics, the military, government and society navigate volatility. Hosted by Richard Anderson, a risk consultant with over 40 years of experience advising some of the world’s largest and most complex organisations, this series cuts through the noise to uncover real-world strategies for thriving in uncertainty.

From geopolitical upheaval and economic shocks to digital threats and reputational risks, we bring you insights from those who lead through uncertainty – and even crisis. How do they assess risk? Who do they turn to? How do they make the tough calls? Where are the boundaries of their risk appeitite?

If you’re a CEO, policymaker, investor, or strategist, this podcast is for you. Because in today’s world, risk isn’t something to fear—it’s something to leverage.

Exploring risk in an uncertain world

Richard Anderson shares his thoughts about the podcast series – including why there is just so much to discuss.

In my lifetime, I’ve rarely seen the world more uncertain. The U.S. is shifting its focus to the Pacific, while Europe grapples with its own identity. Geopolitics is on steroids. Populist leaders have torn up the rulebook, making Thatcher and Reagan look almost wet—if I may borrow Mrs. Thatcher’s own term. Immigration is at record highs, driven in part by climate change, which some still dismiss as “fake news.”

Journalism, once a pillar of trust, is in retreat, while social media amplifies extreme views, deepening divisions. Societies are fracturing. People no longer believe what the other side is saying.

Western economies are drowning in debt. Governments spend beyond their means, with few conventional ways out. Interest payments soar, growth stagnates, and businesses are left to navigate uncertainty, rising taxes, and tightening regulations.

I grew up in the shadow of World War II, under the constant expectation of nuclear war. At eleven or twelve, I remember classmates debating the likelihood of incoming missiles. Yet even then, the world felt more stable than it does today.

So how do we lead in this era of permanent crisis? Some choose to bury their heads: Nothing we can do. Others dismiss it: It’ll all work out. Some see catastrophe at every turn: The end is near! And then there are those who insist: Everything’s fine—so long as you do exactly as I say.

But real leadership requires something else. Political, military, business, and regulatory leaders all face risk. The question is: how do they manage it? How do they break it down, make decisions, and steer their organizations through uncertainty?

That’s what we’ll explore on The Risk Appetite Podcast. I’ll sit down with those who make the tough calls—people who don’t just survive in risk but master it.

Do you have a story about risk? Drop me a line.

The first episode is coming soon. Stay tuned.
